SUMMARY:States of Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:How to Build a Society\n&nbsp\;\n\nmit Hendrik Wagenaar\, Barba
ra Prainsack\, Donna Andrews\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nSolidarity is essential for add
ressing the defining challenges of our time. While many societies engage i
n debates about justice and fair institutions\, they have often failed to
create the conditions for social and planetary flourishing. A key reason i
s the neglect of solidarity: the horizontal ties that bind people together
beyond kinship\, love\, or friendship. Without this ‘social glue’\, s
ocieties struggle with declining trust\, eroded democratic legitimacy\, an
d increasing social and political fragmentation. The book explores the con
cept of solidarity and its entanglement with justice\, trust\, and care. I
t then examines three major societal challenges—climate change\, the los
s of democratic control in economic governance\, and the rise of artificia
l intelligence and digital infrastructures—through the lens of solidarit
 y. Rather than offering merely new policy tools\, this perspective reshape
s the questions we ask and opens up new possibilities for action. Concludi
ng with a vision for the ‘good state’ in the twenty-first century\, th
e book makes a compelling case that solidarity is not a nostalgic ideal bu
t a vital\, generative force for democratic resilience and social cohesion
in an age of uncertainty.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nBarbara Prainsack is a professor
