Institutionalising the development of democracy

Institutionalising the development of democracy
Lecture

"> Do we need a shared understanding of democracy as a society? > Would such an understanding help us work for peace and against polarisation? > And how would we get there? We are convinced that political systems and structures themselves should be more consistently understood, managed, and, above all, continuously developed as common goods.  From this perspective, we want to discuss and explore the idea of institutionalising the development of democracy and our constitution. In practice, we envision a new constitutional body for democracy development. Modelled on Rechnungshof and the Volksanwaltschaft, such a new institution could serve as an umbrella for ongoing, collaborative democracy development that is independent of political parties. This includes addressing the issues around the necessary digital public infrastructure. Through a short input, we love to share our first thoughts around the questions from above and the ideas for "renewing democracy every day as a society". Following the input, we are happy to deepen the questions and ideas with you in the ""democracy repair cafe""".

Stefan Schartlmüller

Stefan is a Co-Founder of the IG Demokratie - which was founded with the Idea "renew democracy every day as a society" in 2012. After 10 years in tourism, he opened two restaurants in Linz in 2009. His role as a restaurant owner, next to other aspects, made him more and more question why politics works better for some and worse for others. identifying participatory methods and culture as a key for renewing and opening political processes, he started different courses around opening, facilitating, and harvesting formats of political dialogue and trauma-sensitive communication. With the IG Demokratie, next to various other projects, he established the Democracy-Repaircafe and deepened a view on democratic deficits, citizens' assemblies, etc. After quitting the restaurant and tourism business in 2015, he was cooking along the "Balkan-route", started growing vegetables in community gardens, worked as a kindergarten assistant, and deepened the work on renewing democracy every day.

Stefan Schartlmüller is also hosting a workshop, Democray-Repaircafe on Institutionalising Democratic Developement.
