Abstract
2024 was a super election year in Austria. The results of the National Council elections in September are in line with recent international trends: government parties are losing, right-wing populists are gaining ground, the center-left is fragmented and continuing to decline. However, the strength of the right-wing populist vote is not a surprising result. What is new is that right-wing populism is consolidated as a party, making government demands, and positioning itself far to the right in terms of content. This article describes the thematic posi-tioning of the parties during negotiations to form the government and analyzes the election results along urban-rural differences and the proportion of foreign votes. The ÖVP has lost the “spatial ownership” of the rural areas. In districts with a low proportion of foreign resi-dents, the FPÖ and ÖVP are comparatively strong, in those with larger proportions, the SPÖ, Abstract 2024 was a super election year in Austria.
